In the 3rd Gamest Grand Prix (1989) run by the magazine Gamest it took 5th place for Best Shooting Game, 4th for Best Presentation, 3rd for Best Graphics and 8th for Best VGM.

It also took 46th place in the Gamest Mook The Best Game (1991).

In the "Cross Review" feature of the magazine Famitsu,the game scored a total of 29 out of 40. In the "Game Report Card" reader poll run by Mega Drive FAN,it scored 18.98 out of 30, as shown below.

In Japan it was released on 1990-7-20 as the first title Namco put out for the Mega Drive.

It was released only in Japan in February 1989.

The arcade version of this game was never released in the United States, due to Artemis's "bondage/torture" scenes, which were shown between each stage, and were similar to those from the new version of Namco's own Rolling Thunder; while no nudity is shown, the scenes were still somewhat "strong" to be shown in an arcade game during the early 16-bit era.

The Japanese magazine Game Machine listed Phelios in their March 1, 1989 issue as being the third most-popular arcade game at the time.
