Although it is billed as the "2nd", it has no connection in story or setting with the previous game, the Game Boy (GB) title Super Robot Wars (1991), and it is the 1st title in the "DC War series", one of the categories of the series.

It is one of 1 titles in the Famicom Mini series, and was given away, not for sale, to 2000 people chosen by lot as a bonus for purchasers of the GameCube title Super Robot Wars GC (2004).

Together with the 3rd and Super Robot Wars EX (1994), it was remade and ported to the PlayStation as a set of 3 games under the title Super Robot Wars Complete Box.

It was the first game to be produced in the "Classic" canon timeline, the second game in the overall series, and the first (and only) game produced for the Famicom video game system on December 29, 1991.

It was released for Game Boy Advance as an exclusive Famicom Mini game, available only as a raffle prize with the purchase of Super Robot Wars GC.

At the start of development, Aura Battler Dunbine was also to appear, but it was rejected at the adjustment stage, and Cybaster appeared as something close to it in image.

In response to this result, Banpresto considered discontinuing the series, but at Winkysoft's earnest request the conclusion was left to the sales of the next game, the Super Famicom title 3rd Super Robot Wars (1993).
