It was first planned as a puzzle game unconnected to Yoshi. When the idea of "turning two columns around" was put in and tried out, the twisting, flipping motion caused by the slowdown of the CPU led to the notion of "an egg closing around something, with Yoshi hatching from it", and the game took its present form. Gunpei Yokoi gave this account in an interview in the book Gunpei Yokoi Game Kan.
