The content follows the 4th and there are no major changes to the story, but because 2nd Super Robot Wars G (hereafter 2nd G), a remake of 2nd Super Robot Wars (hereafter 2nd), the 1st title in the DC War series, had been released before the 4th S went on sale, the 4th S was treated as a story continuing from the 2nd G rather than from the 2nd.

In the "Cross Review" of the game magazine Famitsu, the four reviewers gave 8, 7, 8, and 8, for a total of 31 out of 40, earning a place in the Silver Hall of Fame. In the "Game Report Card" reader poll run by Family Computer Magazine, the rating is as follows, at 24.7 out of 30.
