Soldam — stories left

Moriya suggests that the background to this is that Tsukasa Tawada, a composer well regarded inside the company at the time Soldam was made, had already left Jaleco, so Suzuki, Isemura and Takashiba — 3 of them — took his legacy as a spur and competed against one another, and that this is what led to the quality.

In the "Cross Review" in the game magazine Famicom Tsushin it scored 4, 4, 5 and 4, for a total of 17 out of 40.

In the "Game Report Card" reader poll run by Family Computer Magazine,it scored 16.5 out of 30, as shown below.

The game was released as one of the 1 launch titles that came out alongside the Nintendo Switch itself.

Soldam is a falling-block puzzle game, so the finished shape is fairly visible, and it has a 2-player versus mode, which suits the Nintendo Switch with its two controllers (Joy-Con); that is why it was chosen for development.

Matsushita recalled that when he first saw Soldam at the Jaleco exhibition he could not work out the rule by which the colours change just from watching someone play, and that when he began work on it he wanted players to feel that same sense of not quite understanding but enjoying it.

It was only released in Japan in September 1992.

A Game Boy port was only released in Japan in 1993.

The Family Computer version, which was never released, had a "Soldam" mode, a "Sekiro" mode and a "VS" mode.

A Nintendo Entertainment System version was completed but cancelled before release; Jaleco's successor City Connection released the game in 2025 in collaboration with Broke Studio and Omake Books.
